Maple Village Waldorf School Students recently participated in Algalita’s POPS International Youth Summit, a 3-day empowerment experience held at the Ocean Institute. POPS is an acronym for Plastic Ocean Pollution Solutions.

Over 125 students across 8 countries and 6 U.S. states convened in Dana Point, CA to advance global solutions to plastic pollution. Maple Village Waldorf students won a place at the Summit based on their innovative ideas on how best to combat plastic pollution in their own community.

Ollie Hong, 12, Jermonie Billingsly, 12, and Sophie Smallie, 14, entered a project to replace single use plastic products at Long Beach food banks. They are reaching out to businesses that sell reusable bags and asking them to donate their misprinted bags to the food bank.  The idea being that those coming to the food bank will use them and return with them on an ongoing basis.
