Opening Statement
The Waldorf School of Garden City seeks a Lower School (Grades 1-8) Counselor who is compassionate, responsible, and collaborative. Applicants must have a minimum of five years of experience working with elementary and middle school populations, an NYS School Counseling Certification, and a master’s degree in School Counseling.

For 77 years, the Waldorf School of Garden City has been dedicated to educating children through the active experience of knowledge. Our School has a rich history of translating the remarkable insights of Rudolf Steiner into educational programs addressing the ever-evolving character and needs of each generation of children. We serve about 300 students representing diverse ethnic, socio-economic, religious, and LGBTQ+ communities.
Essential Job Duties
Key Responsibilities
- Implement a school counseling program that aligns with Waldorf Pedagogy for grades 1-8 to support all students through personal, academic, and social development
- This role is essential in fostering personal and social development among students by building trusting relationships and providing necessary support
- The counselor will be responsible for offering short-term social and emotional support, as well as making appropriate referrals for further counseling or other community resources when needed
- In addition, the counselor will facilitate crisis intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of students during challenging times
- Teach Health and Wellness curriculum lessons for grades 3-8.
- The ideal candidate will utilize appropriate assessment tools and procedures to determine the individual and group counseling needs of students
- The counselor will also demonstrate a strong understanding of consulting processes, working collaboratively with students, families, the Garden City School District, administrators, teachers, and the Mental Health Committee to effectively address the social and emotional needs of the students
- Adherence to the laws, policies, and procedures governing school programs is critical, as is maintaining the ethical standards of the counseling profession
- Build trusting relationships with students to provide support and guidance
- Collaborate with local districts, school administrators, and families to oversee (or assist with) the development and implementation of student 504 Plans
- Awareness of and commitment to understanding the tenets of Waldorf Pedagogy
- Advocate for student needs and resources, while promoting equity and social justice
- Be one of the chaperones week-long class trips to Camp Glen Brook 1-3 times per year.
Employment Details
Salary Range is between $65,000-$85,000.
