Job Category:  Lower School: Grades 1-5

Opening Statement

Potomac Crescent Waldorf School (PCWS) is seeking a grades class teacher for the 2026-2027 school year to join our dedicated faculty and vibrant community at our newly renovated school in historic Old Town Alexandria near Washington, D.C. Grades class teachers are responsible for teaching their class from 8:00 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Thursdays, they teach from 8:00 a.m. until noon and participate in faculty meetings until 2:45 p.m.

About

PCWS was established in 1998, and our newly renovated school building is in historic Old Town Alexandria with an onsite playground and access to local parks for forest day programming. PCWS is a full member of WECAN and an associate member of AWSNA. We offer preschool through fifth grade programming, as well as parent-child classes for infants and toddlers from birth to age three.

We have a dedicated staff, faculty, and Board of Directors and a governance model based on collaborative leadership from these three realms. We have a committed community of families with an active Parent Association that offers many opportunities for families to connect with each other, including a handwork group, coffee meet-ups, an annual bonfire and all-school camping trips in the fall and spring.

We strive to develop thoughtful, fulfilled citizens who have the capacity to think imaginatively, communicate effectively, and relate compassionately. We believe in educating the whole human being: head, heart and hands, and in nurturing well-rounded individuals who will be successful in school and beyond.

Essential Job Duties

-Planning and teaching developmentally-appropriate daily main lessons, certain specialty classes and extra main lesson classes based on Waldorf pedagogy and PCWS’s articulated curriculum plan;

-Coordinating with specialty class teachers, including sharing information, strategies, and action plans for individual students when needed;

-Securing all supplies and materials needed for the daily lessons and working within the class supply budget;

-Maintaining a clean, orderly, and beautiful classroom;

-Writing comprehensive, narrative year-end reports, as well as progress report checklists for parent-teacher conferences and at the end of the year;

-Working closely with class parents through regular communication and class updates and by scheduling, organizing and hosting four parent evening meetings and two parent-teacher conferences during the year;

-Working with the Director of Admissions and the grades department to admit families into the grades program.

Grades class teachers are active members of the school’s collaborative faculty and participate in weekly faculty meetings, grades department meetings, and committee work. As such, the candidate must be able to work cooperatively with colleagues and engage in school events and festival celebrations. A commitment to our principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice and a willingness to participate in ongoing work related to this is essential.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a confident classroom presence with strong social and communication skills and a love for children and teaching. We are seeking candidates who have a bachelor’s degree and either have completed Waldorf grades teacher training or can commit to this training and are receptive to mentoring.
