Opening Statement

Apple Blossom Waldorf School & Family Center is seeking an Early Childhood assistant teacher for the 2025-26 school year. This is a part time, hourly position in our Nursery and Kindergarten classrooms with children ages 18 months-3 years old or 3 – 6 years old. As our school is growing there is room to grow professionally.

Essential Job Duties

Job Description: Assistant Teacher, Kindergarten & Nursery

Vision:  A good listener, wants to learn about our particular school culture, youthful spirit, reverent, patient, kind, round and light, humorous, gentle, sincere, striving, a hard worker, open minded, willingness to prepare a nutritious snack for the children and willingness to care for the kitchen, strong sense of self, desire to serve the children, conscious, professional, flexible, and balanced.

General function & responsibilities: The assistant teacher will assist the teacher in carrying out the classroom program and activities, record-keeping, and in caring for the children in the group. The assistant will be responsible for kitchen and snack management and purchasing within the yearly snack budget, snack preparation and clean up for all classrooms.

Qualifications for position:  The assistant will have some knowledge of Waldorf education and philosophy, and will demonstrate commitment to increase her/his understanding by participating in professional development, regular mentoring meetings with the other faculty, as well as by working closely with the lead teacher of the class.  She/he will be prepared to participate in, or lead, at the discretion of the teacher, activities such as the telling of fairy tales, watercolor painting, modeling, handwork, free play, circle time, music, etc.  She/he will be prepared to lead the class in the event that the lead teacher is absent.  In such a situation a substitute would take on the role of assistant.  She/he will meet state and county requirements with regard to licensing.

Relationship with lead teacher:  The assistant’s specific role in the classroom will be worked out cooperatively between the teacher and the assistant in a manner satisfactory to both.  The assistant will be available to discuss with the teacher, outside of class time, ideas and concerns regarding individual children, activities and philosophy of the program, and any other matters of mutual concern. 

Classroom maintenance:  All faculty members have responsibility for day-to-day upkeep and cleanliness of the classroom, and will leave the room in clean and orderly condition each day.  Storage areas will be maintained in neat condition.  Any repairs or other work needed will be reported to the lead teacher of the class. 

Substitutes The assistant will be responsible for finding a substitute when needed, using the substitute list as a resource.  If the substitute for the teacher’s classroom colleague cancels then the teacher is responsible for finding someone to replace the substitute. 

Community Participation:  The assistant will be encouraged to participate in all school festivals and other seasonal celebrations sponsored by the school. She/he will attend outreach events, meetings or other activities determined by the Faculty to be necessary for the growth and stability of the school. It is the hope that the assistant will become an integral part of our community.

Qualifications

A warm and open disposition with the ability to lovingly care for children of mixed ages. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children and hold a bachelor’s degree or associate degree. Eagerness to learn about Apple Blossom and Waldorf education. Waldorf training and experience preferred, but not required.

Requirements: The ability to meet Connecticut OEC licensing requirements including yearly professional development, as well as to pass a CT criminal background check. To be able to lift and carry small children during caregiving times.
