AFTERNOON PROGRAM ASSISTANT TEACHER

Opening Statement

Seacoast Waldorf School is seeking an Afternoon Program Assistant Teacher.

Reports to: Lead Teachers

Overtime Status: Nonexempt

SUMMARY: From 12:00-3:00pm, you will be assisting in the early childhood program. From 3:00-5:30pm, you will be working in the grades extended day program.

HOURS: Combined hours will be 12:00-5:30pm. This position starts in late August and runs until early June.

COMPENSATION: $19.19/hour with some benefits

Essential Job Duties

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing afternoon care in the early childhood that includes: helping children transition into rest time, bodily care, and waking from rest time, outdoor play supervision, dismissal to parents/caregivers, etc., as indicated by the Lead Teacher. 
  • Assisting the Lead Teacher in maintaining an orderly, clean, and healthy classroom environment; leaving the room(s) and outdoor space prepared for the next day. Making certain the lunch room is tidy after use and that the children have cleaned their spaces, both on the table and the area surrounding where they sat for lunch.
  • Washing and putting away any  remaining dishes from lunch or afternoon use. 
  • Reading appropriate books and/or singing at rest time. 
  • After rest, make certain all resting mats and pillows/blankets are returned to their proper places.
  • Maintaining safety and observing playground rules when outdoors.
  • Putting away outdoor equipment (shovels, rakes, etc). 
  • For the grades extended day program: Preparing snacks and activities for the program beginning at 3pm. (being aware of children’s allergies, medical conditions, and dietary restrictions)
  • Communicating regularly with the lead class teachers.
  • Taking attendance:  Responsible for marking attendance and ensuring parents are signing children out at pick-up. Communicating with the Administrative Assistant about drop-ins and attendance limits in the afternoon program. 
  • Ensuring that all doors are locked and secured, the stove top, oven, and all lights are off, when leaving the premises at the end of the program. 
  • Cleaning and putting away playground equipment – getting indoor and outdoor spaces ready for the next day.
  • Participating in a professional development process, as indicated by the school (WECAN conference participation)

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience with or willingness to learn about Waldorf education and curriculum
  • Some experience in child care
  • 21-plus years of age
  • Reliable transportation

Skills/Characteristics:

  • Enthusiasm for working with children
  • Familiarity with working within the Waldorf early childhood model
  • Experience working with children
  • Understanding of the need to be an appropriate role model for children and parents
  • Positive and effective communication skills
  • Able to work supportively and collaboratively with others
  • Joyful presence and demeanor 
  • Ability to work professionally and maintain confidentiality when dealing with challenging situations

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must pass the state of Maine Child Abuse Check and Maine Criminal Record Check/ background clearance.
