Opening Statement

Vancouver Waldorf School is seeking a Grade 1 Classroom Assistant, working directly with children under the direct guidance of the Class Teacher.

Essential Job Duties

Reporting Relationships

The CA reports directly to the Class Teacher/s in regards to the specific grades with which they work and overall to the College of Teachers and the Head of School with regards to performance evaluation and development. The Class Teacher Assistant reports directly to the Head of School about the ongoing use and performance of the CA.

Position Accountabilities

  • This position may be designated as a “teacher in training” position in which case the CA is also accountable to any “training plan” developed for them. This may involve attendance at professional development training sessions provided both in and outside of the school.
  • Attends grade school faculty meetings.

Essential Duties

Classroom Support

  • Support the Class Teacher in delivering Waldorf curriculum and maintaining a warm, nurturing, and rhythmical learning environment.
  • Assist with preparation of classroom materials, art supplies, and lesson props.
  • Help with transitions between activities, ensuring students remain focused and engaged.
  • Provide individual or small-group support to students as directed by the Class Teacher.

Student Guidance & Care

  • Observe and support children’s social, emotional, and developmental needs in a gentle, non-intrusive way.
  • Encourage healthy habits, self-care, and respectful interactions among students.
  • Assist with conflict resolution using age-appropriate, Waldorf-aligned approaches.
  • Supervise children during recess, lunch, and field trips, ensuring safety and inclusion.

Administrative & Organizational Support

  • Maintain tidiness and order in the classroom, ensuring materials are cared for and accessible.
  • Prepare and organize seasonal displays, chalkboard drawings, and festival decorations (as directed).
  • Track and restock classroom supplies as needed.

Collaboration & Professional Conduct

  • Attend faculty meetings and participate in in-service training as requested.
  • Communicate respectfully with parents, directing inquiries to the Class Teacher as appropriate.
  • Model professionalism, punctuality, and commitment to Waldorf values

Qualifications

Position Qualifications

  • An undergraduate education degree or Waldorf Teacher Training certification (or equivalent) or evidence of participation toward the completion of one of these qualifications is preferred
  • An understanding of Waldorf education
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience of working with children 6 to 15 years old
  • Competency with word processing
  • Compatibility with existing Faculty, volunteers and parents

Position Information

This is a full time position. Specific days and hours are determined by the employment agreement.

Remuneration is set at $27.05 per hour. Employee benefits include tuition as a taxable benefit, and an Extended Health Benefits Plan, which includes a Dental Plan, Life Insurance Plan, short and long term disability plan, and other health benefits
