Early Childhood Teaching Assistant
Opening Statement
Washington Waldorf School Early Childhood Assistants support Lead Teachers in cultivating a warm, inclusive environment and provide meaningful and creative experiences, allowing children to be deeply immersed in play and to nourish their sense of wonder, trust in themselves, care for others, connection to nature and love of learning.
This is an hourly, full-time position, for approximately 40 hours per week during the school year. In addition to classroom responsibilities, attendance at weekly full faculty and department meetings; in-service and out-service meetings prior to and immediately after each school year; and professional development days are encouraged. In some cases, the Assistant may also be requested to join parent-teacher meetings and conferences as well as enrollment events.

Founded in 1969, Washington Waldorf School operates in the Cabin John/Glen Echo area of Bethesda, MD, just outside of Washington, DC. The school serves 285 students and their families, from ages pre-K through Grade 12. Washington Waldorf cultivates each student’s capacity to think clearly, feel compassionately, and act purposefully in the world. Essential Job Duties
- Supporting classroom setup, cleanup, and daily rhythm tasks, including snack preparations
- Assisting with supervision of the class
- Meeting regularly with the Lead Teacher for planning and review
Qualifications
- Experience working with young children
- Familiarity or strong interest in Waldorf education is preferred
- Experience working with neurodivergent children preferred
- Ability to physically engage in outdoor activities in seasonal weather
- Ability to pass a Maryland Background check and meet Maryland Office of Child Care compliance requirements (some Teaching Assistants may be required to obtain and maintain the OCC Lead Teacher certification; WWS will assume the financial responsibility for this certification)
- Bachelor’s degree
- Waldorf Teacher Certification or training strongly preferred
Employment Details
The compensation for this position includes a wage of $25/hour and our full benefits package which includes health, disability and life insurance; dental reimbursement; retirement plan (after 1 year of employment); optional dental, vision, and illness/accident insurance; professional development support; and tuition remission for the employee’s children attending WWS, as articulated in the Employee Handbook.
