Pediatrician, parent and Columbia University scientist, Dr. Robert Whitaker, discusses philosophical and practical approaches to managing technology in our lives.

The blog post is the edited transcription of a lecture delivered to the Parent Association at the Waldorf School of Philadelphia. Whitaker looks at the double edged sword that is modern technology both in the lives of our children and as adults.

As he says, “Digital technology is a bit like the sun. It is here to stay. But is the sun good for children? Does the sun give children skin cancer or build strong bones? It does both.”

In the article, Whitaker encourages society, and especially parents, to consider the underlying intentions behind media usage, and he gives specific recommendations on how to manage media for different stages of child development.
